How Streaming Services Affected the Television/Film Industry

What started as a video rental company competing with Blockbuster, Netflix then became a major competitor in both the film and television industry. “Since Netflix began its worldwide expansion in 2016, the streaming service has rewritten the playbook for global entertainment — from TV to film, and, more recently, video games” (Moses & Rodriguez, 2023). Not only did Netflix create their own shows and films, but they eradicated consumer patience with watching commercials. Then by releasing entire series of shows at once, Netflix created binge-watching, which became a consumption trend in its own right. A prime example of this was the release of Netflix’s original show, Orange is the New Black. The show has since become Netflix’s most watched original programming, with Stranger Things later becoming the second most watched original show on the platform. “Orange is the New Black, became the most influential show of the decade” (Berman, 2019). The show was one of the first shows that consumers had the power to binge watch and it had an increased level of diversity not seen elsewhere. “Not only did Orange help put streaming on the map, it suggested there was a way to make TV specifically for streaming” (Herman, 2019). This then led to other streaming platforms such as Hulu and Prime Video to start creating their own content. Additionally, other television networks such as Paramount and HBO have created their own streaming services.

Streaming platforms changed the movie industry again, when in 2020 films meant to be released in theaters were directly released to streaming platforms. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, theaters were closed and “the number of subscriptions to online video streaming services worldwide reached 1.1 billion in 2020” (Durrani, 2023). Because consumers could no longer go see new movies at a theater, streaming services began to release new films that had been intended for a theatrical release. As long as consumers had a subscription to a streaming service, they had access to all content, including brand new films, at no additional cost. Not only did this anger many filmmakers, but it has led to lawsuits and has since created the challenge of getting people back into theaters. “Movies that stayed in cinemas for more than six months are increasingly being released on streaming platforms at the same time as cinema release or a few weeks later” (Durrani, 2023). An example of theaters trying to regain consumers can be seen, with AMC’s ad to get people back into the theaters.
